This key session will be chaired by Dr.Simone Panigada, President of the Tethys Research Institute and Chair of the ACCOBAMS Scientific Committee. He holds a degree in Biological Sciences (University of Milan) and a Ph.D. in Environmental Biology (University of Siena). With over 30 years of experience in marine mammal conservation, Dr. Panigada brings a wealth of knowledge on assessing ship-strike impacts and implementing mitigation strategies worldwide.

Tim Collins โ€“ Wildlife Conservation Society
Abstract: Satellite telemetry reveals potential interactions and vessel strike risks for migrating Indian Ocean humpback whales.
Tim will present real-world insights from the Quieter Western Indian Ocean Project (QWIO). His work maps the growing risks faced by humpback whales in one of the fastest-expanding maritime regions, highlighting the urgent need for targeted conservation strategies.

Dr.Auriane Virgili โ€“ SHARE THE OCEAN
Abstract: Development of an encounter model to assess the risk of encountering cetaceans during offshore races
Auriane will introduce a predictive model that identifies when and where racing yachts are most likely to cross paths with cetaceans. Her research provides valuable tools for minimizing ecological impact during offshore competitionsโ€”uniting science and sustainability.
